Love this general evaluation method:

  • The timeliness (publication date, revision history) of the information.
  • Broken links or an old publication date indicates the page has not been updated recently.
  • The importance of the information for your needs.
  • Consider your audience and compare with a variety of sources.
  • The source (author, publisher, sponsor) of the information.
  • Check for contact information and the credentials of the author.
  • The reliability (source, evidence, truthfulness) of the information.
  • Think about the source and look for evidence of bias or error.
  • The reason (teach, sell, entertain) the information exists.
  • Identify the type of information (fact or opinion) and the intent of the author.

Video Game Evaluation Resources

Note no definitive evaluation form. The focus will not be on the controls, but rather on how well the game creators represent the historical record and how much the game player can get out of the game compared to the written record.
Note the difference between first person shooter games and strategy games.
Games are largely measured in terms of enjoyment based on flow of the game. Here are some flow criteria:

How well does the game immerse the player in the narrative and how much does the player need to be aware of the gaming interface? Optimized Challenges, Concentration, Clear Goals, Immediate feedback, Effortless enjoyment, Sense of control, disappearance of self, Altered sense of time)
How believable is the fiction? Is there too much suspension of disbelief? (It does not have to be realistic)
How realistic (traits, identity, personality) are the "people" in the game? Scale from no personality to complex traits, identity, personality
How well does the game evoke suspense, satisfaction or relief, puzzlement or desire for more information about history?
How much of a story narrative is there (Set up, Complications, Development, Resolution or Climax)?
How strong do you identify with the narrator or central character? (first person, 3rd person, god-view)
How participatory is the game?
How large is the space the game operates in?
Is cause and effect present in the series of choices presented? (is the story liner, or multi-path?)
What is the genre of the game? Action games merely depedent on reflexes; Role playing games; 2d Platform games; first person shooters; strategy games; physical interactive games (dancing, sports); massive multi player game
